Confidentiality & Data Protection
Your Privacy Matters
Everything you share with me in therapy is confidential. This page explains how I protect your privacy, handle your information and the rare circumstances when confidentiality might need to be broken.
Confidentiality in Therapy
What you tell me in our sessions stays between us. I will not share information about you, the fact that you're in therapy with me or anything you've disclosed unless:
You give me explicit permission (for example, if you want me to write a letter to your GP).
There is a serious risk of harm to you or to someone else.
I am legally required to disclose (for example, by a court order or in cases involving terrorism or money laundering).
There are safeguarding concerns involving a child or vulnerable adult.
These exceptions are rare and if I ever need to break confidentiality, I will discuss this with you first wherever possible.
Clinical Supervision
As part of my professional practice, I engage in regular clinical supervision. This means I discuss my work with an experienced supervisor to ensure I'm offering you the best possible care.
In supervision, I may talk about our sessions but I do so without using your name or identifying details. My supervisor will not know who you are. This is a standard and essential part of ethical therapeutic practice.
Record Keeping
I keep brief, confidential notes about our sessions. These notes are for my own use to help me remember what we've discussed and to track your progress over time.
These notes are stored securely and are not shared with anyone unless you give me permission or I'm legally required to do so (as outlined above).
You have the right to access your records. If you'd like to see your notes, please let me know and we can discuss this.
Data Protection (GDPR Compliance)
I am committed to protecting your personal data in line with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
What information I collect:
Your name and contact details (address, email, phone number)
Basic demographic information (age, relevant background)
Brief notes about our therapy sessions
Payment records
Why I collect it:
To provide you with therapy
To maintain records for professional and legal purposes
To contact you about appointments
To process payments
How I store it:
All personal data is stored securely, either in password-protected digital files or in locked physical storage
I retain records for 7 years after our final session, as required by professional guidelines
After this time, all records are securely destroyed
Your rights:
Under GDPR, you have the right to:
Access your personal data
Request corrections to your data
Request deletion of your data (subject to professional and legal requirements)
Withdraw consent for me to process your data (though this may mean I cannot continue to offer you therapy)
If you'd like to exercise any of these rights, please contact me.
Communication & Technology
Email and text messages: When we communicate by email or text to arrange appointments, please be aware that these are not completely secure methods of communication. I will not discuss therapeutic content via email or text, only practical arrangements.
Online sessions: If we meet via Zoom, please ensure you're in a private space where you won't be overheard. Zoom is encrypted, but no online platform is 100% secure. We can discuss any concerns you have about online sessions.
Phone calls: If we speak on the phone (for arranging sessions or for telephone therapy) ensure you're somewhere private where you can speak freely.
Insurance & Professional Membership
I am a registered member (MBACP 00982014) of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work in accordance with their Ethical Framework.
I hold professional indemnity insurance with Everywhen formerly known as Towergate Insurance Group.
If you wish to make a complaint about my practice, you can contact me directly, or you can contact the BACP directly. Details of their complaints procedure are available on their website: www.bacp.co.uk
